Chapter 7

The Face of Victory

We have explored enough strategies so far to fight global warming. Now let’s step back and think rationally about what’s really going to work for us. We currently have three options on the table: a geoengineering strategy to reduce global heat, a carbon capture strategy to reduce CO2, and a solar strategy to move away from fossil fuels. Which of them provides workable solution to global warming? At what stage can we say that we have defeated global warming? What does the victory really look like?

The ultimate goal of this blood game is to rollback our ecosystem to the pre-fossil fuel era to reclaim the stable climatic conditions mankind has flourished in for millennia. The spotlight ought to be on a switch-to-solar and capture-the-carbon strategy. For this strategy to work in our favor, we must switch to solar from fossil fuel sources at every available opportunity and relentlessly capture CO2 until the earth can naturally release the trapped heat. That will also save the world from the unintended consequences of geoengineering.

But the inspired global community expeditiously capturing CO2 may overdo it. Unless they know exactly where to stop, they may overdo it and unintentionally push the planet toward global cooling. Our ecosystem could also absorb more CO2 than expected as a result of efficient global reforestation and de-acidification of the oceans, adding to inadvertent cooling, which would disturb the climate just as much as rapid global warming does and require our intervention to pump some CO2 back into the atmosphere to keep it warm. The point is, we must closely monitor CO2 levels even after we pull the planet out of the current global warming crisis, a truly Herculean task of maintaining an eco-balance. If we can master the art of keeping our planet’s ecosystem in equilibrium, not allowing it to warm up or cool down, then we can claim to have won the battle against global warming. However, this victory is not a one-time event; it’s a perpetual process. If we falter, the earth will again drift towards a warming or cooling phase, putting climatic conditions out of balance.

Both global warming and cooling are natural processes, meaning we need to hold our ecosystem hostage in artificial balance, which may have obvious ill effect on the planet’s ecosystem and all life on it. When we should let our planet go free from human clutches is another debate after we learn from balancing it.

For now our focused intent should be building proficient AI, capturing high-quality data, and eventually pulling our planet out of a global warming phase. To achieve this we need time, of which there isn’t much. That magnifies the immense value of green initiatives that help us reduce our carbon footprint and slow the current pace of global warming. Green living may not be the cure for global warming, but it can buy us some time to plan and execute more effective strategies.

If we are not able to switch to solar in a decade or so, then we’ll have no other option but to use geoengineering strategies despite their dangers.
